MASTER PROGRAM

MASTER PROGRAM IN PUBLIC HEALTH- PRIMARY HEALTH CARE-HEALTH SERVICES UNIVERSITY OF CRETE, MEDICAL SCHOOL, HERAKLION, CRETE.

GENERAL INFO:

The duration of the master program is 2 academic years (4 semesters).

 

A total of 120 ECTS credits are required for the successful completion of the program.

  1. a) 60 ECTS credits from the successful completion of courses (1st & 2nd Semester)
  2. b) 30 ECTS from the drafting and submission of the research proposal and the collection of data for the master’s thesis (3rd semester)
  3. c) 30 ECTS from the successful completion and public presentation of the master’s thesis (4th semester).

 

SPECIALIZATIONS:

The master program in Public Health/Primary Health Care/Health Services awards a degree in the field of “Public Health – Primary Health Care – Health Services” in the following specializations:

(a) Public Health and Primary Health Care

(b) Health Services

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

The language of the program is GREEK.

 Since all courses are taught in Greek, excellent knowledge of the Greek language is mandatory for completing the program.

The master thesis can be written in Greek or English.

Attendance in class is mandatory. Absence limit: 1/3 of class hours

Exams require physical presence of the students.

Part-time students are not accepted.

 

 

 

PROGRAM STRUCTURE:

The curriculum is structured as follows:

 

1st SEMESTER

MPH101 Introduction to Public Health and Primary Health Care (6 ECTS)

MPH102 Epidemiology I (6 ECTS)

MPH103 Biostatistics I (6 ECTS)

MPH104 Research methodology (6 ECTS)

MPH105 Health services (6 ECTS)

 

2nd SEMESTER

During the 2nd semester, the students attend 3 courses, based on the specialization they chose at the end of the 1st semester.

 

SPECIALIZATION:  PUBLIC HEALTH – PRIMARY HEALTH CARE:

MPH201 Infectious diseases Epidemiology (10 ECTS)

MPH202 Epidemiology II (10 ECTS)

MPH203 Biostatistics II (10 ECTS)

 

SPECIALIZATION: HEALTH SERVICES:

MPH204 Economic evaluation of health services (10 ECTS)

MPH205 Law and health services (10 ECTS)

MPH206 Administration of health services (10 ECTS)

 

*For a specialization to be offered, it must be selected by at least 30% of the students. The steering committee may adjust this percentage to ensure the smooth operation of the program.

 

3rd SEMESTER

MPH301 Protocol writing and data collection for the master’s thesis (30 ECTS)

 

4th SEMESTER

Preparation and writing of the master’s thesis (30 ECTS)

All students must defend their master thesis in a public presentation. Public presentations are held usually at the start of June of every academic year. Dates of the presentations are announced publicly.

Students, member of supervisory committees, advisory committees, examination committees, and any other interested can participate in the public presentation. The duration of the presentation of each student is total 15 minutes.

After the public presentation, the examination committee (three members) grade the written thesis and the presentation.

COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:

To complete the program, the following is required:

a) completion of the five (5) required courses in the first semester and the three (3) required courses per specialization in the second semester (60 ECTS),

b) drafting of a research protocol and the collection of data for the master’s thesis during the third semester (30 ECTS)

c) successful completion, writing, and public presentation of the master’s thesis during the fourth semester (30 ECTS)

TUITION FEES

Tuition fees are 2.000 euros total. The amount of 2.000 euros are paid in installments during the first year of study.

Up to 30% of the total number of students admitted to the program may, upon request, be exempted from tuition fees provided that the criteria set forth in Article 86 of Law 4957/2022 are met.

The application for exemption from tuition fees is submitted after the completion of the student registration process for the Program.

Categories of Eligible Graduates

The following are eligible for admission to the Program:

Holders of degrees from the university or former technological sector of Higher Education, or academically recognized degrees from foreign higher education institutions, from Departments of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and other Departments of Health Sciences, Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, and other departments in related fields; from departments whose subject matter relates to public health initiatives, primary health care, and health services administration; as well as from departments or schools with related subject matter.

Also, at least one (1) recommendation letter is mandatory. The letter is sent directly from the author to the master program. Letters uploaded by the applicants will not be taken into consideration.

NUMBER OF ADMITTED GRADUATES

The maximum number of students admitted to the Program is set at forty (40) per year. The minimum number of students admitted to the Program is set at five (5).

SELECTION CRITERIA/ PROCEDURE

Applications are open usually in June, for every academic year.

The required documents are specified in the annual call for applications (in Greek language), usually every June.

Candidates who have applied for the Program are invited to an interview. The purpose of the interviews is to determine which candidates are capable of effectively meeting the Program’s requirements, taking into account their motivation and interest as well as their overall aptitude and scientific competence in relation to the fields of Public Health, Primary Health Care, and Health Services.

Candidates are selected based on criteria that include: 1) undergraduate grade, 2) grades in undergraduate courses related to the Program’s subject matter, 3) performance on the thesis if required at the undergraduate level, 4) any research activity undertaken by the candidate, 5) evaluation of letters of recommendation, 6) sufficient knowledge of Greek and English language and 7) performance in the personal interview.

The above criteria are evaluated on a 1-10 scale (with 10 being the highest score).

The evaluation for the admission of Master’s students to the Program is conducted by a 5-member Selection Committee.

After the interviews are completed, the Selection Committee compiles the initial lists of successful and any alternate students based on their ranking in descending order. These lists are published on the Program’s website.

Any appeals (which must be substantiated and specific) must be filed within 7 days of the date of publication of the initial lists and are reviewed by a three-member Appeals Committee.

The final lists of successful candidates and any alternate students are published on the Program’s website.

BOARD – STEERING COMMITTEE

The Program Steering Committee is composed of five (5) faculty members of the Medical School of the University of Crete that are elected for a two-year term. The Director of Studies acts as the president of the Committee. The Committee is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the operation of the Program.
